Utah Health Insurance Pool

What is the Utah Health Insurance Pool?   The Utah Health Insurance Pool (HIP) was created by the state of Utah to provide health insurance to individuals that have been “denied” or “declined” coverage by a traditional insurance carrier (i.e. Humana, Blue Cross, Altius, Assurant, and Select Health).  The Utah HIP is actually managed by Select Health, but don’t confuse Select Health with the Select Health HIP program.

There are many requirements one must meet before he or she is accepted into the Utah HIP program.  One the requirement you must meet is to have been “declined” by a traditional insurance carrier in the state of Utah.  Unfortunately these days it’s not too hard to get declined from a traditional health insurance carrier in Utah!  Any number of medical conditions can make you either “uninsurable for life” or “temporarily uninsurable.”

One of the many medical conditions that make many individuals in Utah “uninsurable for life” is insulin dependent diabetes.  An example of being “temporary uninsurable” maybe because you recently had a serious back surgery and so for the next year or maybe longer most traditional insurance carriers will not offer you coverage. In either case you would be a good candidate for the Utah HIP.

However, in most cases before you’ll be accepted into the Utah HIP you will need to show proof that you were declined coverage from a traditional insurance carrier.  So how does one obtain this proof you ask? By submitting an application to a one of you Utah’s five many insurance carrier Humana, Select Health, Blue Cross, Assurant, and Altius.  If you are declined coverage from any one these carriers you are a likely candidate to be accepted into the Utah HIP.

What are some other reasons I may  be ineligible for a Utah HIP plan? Hmm…great question; well the two many reasons are:

1.  You have not been a resident in the state of Utah for at least one year.

2. You have access to alternative coverage (i.e. an employer’s group plan, or access to Cobra).

Summary

In closing the Utah HIP can be very difficult to navigate by yourself, and using a Utah health insurance broker will save you a lot of time, money, and potential heartache.  A Utah health insurance broker will ensure you’ve exhausted all other means for purchasing health insurance, because the Utah HIP premium are 30-40 percent higher than traditional insurance carrier plans. This short description of the Utah HIP requirements and restrictions is just a basic overview, in order to navigate the Utah health insurance market you need an experienced broker.  Give us a call or send us an email and let us help you!
